چکیده

We investigate the online exploration problem of a shortsighted mobile robot moving in an unknown cellular room without obstacles. The robot has a very limited sensor; it can determine only which of the four cells adjacent to its current position are free and which are blocked, i. e., unaccessible for the robot. Therefore, the robot must enter a cell in order to explore it. The robot has to visit each cell and to return to the start. Our interest is in a short exploration tour, i. e., in keeping the number of multiple cell visits small. For abitrary environments without holes we provide a strategy producing tours of length S ≤ C + 1 2 E − 3, where C denotes the number of cells—the area—, and E denotes the number of boundary edges—the perimeter—of the given environment. Further, we show that our strategy is competitive with a factor of 4 3 , and give a lower bound of 7 6 for our problem. This leaves a gap of only 1 6 between the lower and the upper bound.

Competitive Exploration of Rectilinear Polygons

Exploring a polygon with robots when the robots do not have knowledge of the surroundings can be viewed as an online problem. Typical for online problems is that decisions must be made based on past events without complete information about the future. In our case the robots do not have complete information about the environment. Competitive analysis can be used to measure the performance of me...

Drawing Free Trees Inside Simple Polygons Using Polygon Skeleton

Most of graph drawing algorithms draw graphs on unbounded planes. In this paper we introduce a new polyline grid drawing algorithm for drawing free trees on plane regions which are bounded by simple polygons. Our algorithm uses the simulated annealing (SA) method, and by means of the straight skeletons of the bounding polygons guides the SA method to uniformly distribute the vertices of the giv...

Vertex Guards in a Subclass of Orthogonal Polygons

We call grid n-ogon each n-vertex orthogonal simple polygon, with no collinear edges, that may be placed in a ) 2 / ( ) 2 / ( n n × unit square grid. In this paper we consider the Minimum Vertex Guard problem for this class of orthogonal polygons. As a step for the resolution of this general problem, we are going to study it for an interesting subclass of grid n-ogons: the SPIRAL grid nogons, w...

An Approximation Algorithm for the Two-Watchman Route in a Simple Polygon

The two-watchman route problem is that of computing a pair of closed tours in an environment so that the two tours together see the whole environment and some length measure on the two tours is minimized. Two standard measures are: the minmax measure, where we want the tours where the longest of them has minimal length, and the minsum measure, where we want the tours for which the sum of their ...

Minimum Covering with Travel Cost

Given a polygon and a visibility range, the Myopic Watchman Problem with Discrete Vision (MWPDV) asks for a closed path P and a set of scan points S , such that (i) every point of the polygon is within visibility range of a scan point; and (ii) path length plus weighted sum of scan number along the tour is minimized. Alternatively, the bicriteria problem (ii’) aims at minimizing both scan numbe...

Single-Point Visibility Constraint Minimum Link Paths in Simple Polygons

We address the following problem: Given a simple polygon $P$ with $n$ vertices and two points $s$ and $t$ inside it, find a minimum link path between them such that a given target point $q$ is visible from at least one point on the path. The method is based on partitioning a portion of $P$ into a number of faces of equal link distance from a source point. This partitioning is essentially a shor...
